Gemma Chan isn’t just the first actress to portray two completely different characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sersi in The Eternals and Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel; she is also the first woman to lend her voice and likeness to a completely new character for a video game within the James Bond franchise. During Xbox’s Showcase, it was recvealed that Chan will be joining the cast of 007 First Light as Selina Tan, MI6’s Head of Tactical Simulation.
For those unfamiliar with the James Bond lore, MI6 is the secret organization that employs Bond and tasks him with various missions. With Selina Tan as the Head of Tactical Simulation, we’ll get a personal and deep look at the starting steps of the world’s most dangerous spy. To mark the occasion, Chan described her excitement, saying, “Joining the world of James Bond in video games has been such an exciting experience. Selina Tan is a fascinating character, and I canโt wait for players to meet her. Bringing Selina to life in 007 First Light has been an absolute privilege.“
CEO at IO Interactive, Hakan Abrak, also shared his excitement about Chen’s involvement, saying, “We are delighted to welcome Gemma Chan to the ensemble cast of 007 First Light. Her experience and emotional range will bring a lot of depth to the character of Selina Tan. With her performance, I believe players will experience an added layer of authenticity and cinematic storytelling that feels right at home in the world of espionage.” Considering that more and more games are taking the cinematic route by adding well-known actors, I have to say I agree that her addition will help the game feel like an authentic extension of the films and books.
Developed by IO Interactive, 007 First Light takes fans back to the origins of James Bond, before he became the various-faced man we’ve come to know today. What looks to be similar to Machine Games’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, players will be given a bit more control over how they choose to approach missions, whether that be with deadly force or more stealthy precision. According to what I’ve seen in the trailers, I have no idea how I’m supposed to be sneaky when there are so many things to destroy. But I guess that isn’t the point.
