When you make the decision to go to the gym, you’re doing so to better your own life. Whether it’s to shed a few pounds or to gain strength, there is always a conscious goal in mind. So, what happens if someone tries to discourage you from these goals? This is what a cruel gym instructor did at a Crunch Fitness gym in New York. Now, a woman is speaking out against her – and it turns out others had the same grueling experience!
Mia (@miatheresabahr) shared a TikTok video about a fitness class she recently took in New York City with Corinne, a local instructor. It was described as a “muscle and hustle” class, and Mia thought it would be a good fit for her. Mia pointed out that the class didn’t say it was for advanced fitness levels, so she took it, wanting some strength experience.
Mia was not expecting what came next when she entered the class. She was in the back of the class and was struggling to keep up with the others so she modified some of the moves to fit her level. Mia was approached by the instructor, who asked her, “Is this your first time in my class?” She laughed into her mic when Mia told her this was the first time she took her class. She then continued to make comments throughout the class toward Mia. Corinne would take the mic and tell the class that she knows they’re going a little slow because some of the classmates couldn’t keep up with her. She obviously meant Mia and was calling her out for it.
Mia left the class upset and feeling judged. Let me just say, this is not how someone is supposed to feel when they leave a gym. You should leave feeling empowered and ready to take charge of your life. If an instructor is making people feel that way, then they shouldn’t be in that position. Mia hated how it felt like she “paid to get made fun of” and that’s just sad.
One commenter said that they actually took one of Corinne’s classes and had the same experience. They said, “Oh yup I have taken her class. Hated it!!! I use it as an example of what I don’t want from group fitness. Like, stop yelling at me! Can you trust I am already going my hardest and fastest? You don’t have to criticize my knee problems on the mic!! SO MANY BURPEES!! FOR WHAT?!?” Another person pointed out, “It’s the mean girl to fitness instructor pipeline.” I feel like, if I was in this position, I would have to say something. It’s always a good idea to stand up for yourself when you’re doing the right thing but being criticized for it.
