AI still has a ways to go, as is evident with an automated camera in Connecticut sending the same wrong driver speeding ticket. Now, if this happened once, it’s a hassle but easily resolvable by providing evidence of the camera’s mistake. But this has happened three times now, with the same driver and the same culprit, all the while, an officer has manually reviewed the violation and found it correct.
According to the victim of this automated error, the issue was that their license plate was too similar to the one that violated the law, leading the camera AI to mistake them for the culprit. However, they drive a white sedan, a car completely different from the black GMC shown on the violation’s paperwork. Posting their frustration on r/mildlyinfuriating, the driver fortunately claims they don’t have to do much to deal with the annoying problem. “All I have to do is visit the website on the ticket, enter in my info with a quick dispute and some picture documentation, and they all get wiped off. Still, it’s the principle,” they remark.
Others chimed in with their irritation with how unreliable some of this underdeveloped tech can be, especially since it involves legal issues. “That is so stupid. The picture of the car needs to be factored into the algorithm of ticket issue,” read a reply. “You would almost think the system would have provision to flag these specific plates for manual review if a couple numbers have been mixed up a few times previously…” joked a commenter. “Yeah, I’m against for-profit robots doing the job of law enforcement,” added another.
Of course, there are plenty of high-tech camera AI that’s used to catch criminals or keep tabs on citizens, like in a well-known Communist country. But for the average person trying to get through life, such AI has been more or less frustrating to deal with.
