It sounds incredibly rewarding to be a teacher who teaches refugees in America how to speak English. You’re giving them one of the biggest gifts as they navigate life within the states. One teacher in New York is constantly blown away by the kindness and love that she experiences in her adult classroom on the daily. In particular, a refugee in her classroom shows that he cares about everyone around him in a special way, and it’s so heartwarming.

Shrea Kumar (@shreakumar5) is a teacher who teaches an adult class of refugees English every week. In a recent TikTok post, she explained that she teaches these students weekly and adds, “Every week, this student brings in food for the whole class.” In the video, you can see an adult male student handing out snacks to the students as they work. He unpacks his grocery bag and serves sandwiches, chips, and more with everyone. The best part is that he looks so loving and happy while he’s doing it.

Shrea also shared that, on Veteran’s Day, her student (Hazaa from Syria) made a special frame for the Veterans in the classroom. It proudly states, “IN HONR OF UOR HAPPY VETERANS DAY.” She took a picture of him in front of his creation, smiling away. Shrea stated, “Things like this make me love humanity.” It’s clear that she feels incredibly rewarded by what she gets to do for these refugees. It’s also clear that so many of them return the love.

As one commenter pointed out, “I know this is his love language.” It shows that bringing food and sharing it with his classmates brings him the greatest joy and sense of accomplishment, and I love this for him. Another commenter explained, “Immigrants have a sense of community and empathy that some folks can’t even process. It’s because they are more worldly, bilingual and have more experience with different cultures and people. Immigrants are by default more educated because they have traveled and experienced more and understand more human and social interactions like language and culture.”

The fact that somebody would go to the effort with strangers around him speaks wonders. This is the perfect example of how people stick together and support one another. It’s one of the most beautiful things about America.
