Some business owners weave their personal views into how they run their companies, and Darwell’s Happiness Cafe in Mississippi is a recent example. The married couple behind the cafe hasn’t shown much support for the LGBTQ+ community. On March 22, they offered a special event intended only for “heterosexual straight people,” fully aware that many would see this as homophobic. In a video response, the husband mocked those who criticized the choice. He said people warned him that his business would collapse within a month and called him “hateful,” “bigot,” and “racist,” but he insisted none of it bothered him.
The Mississippi owner went on to say that business had stayed strong in the months following their heterosexual special. He claimed he had already served more than a hundred customers on the morning he filmed his video and added that he was still waiting for the predicted collapse to happen. The situation escalated when his wife joined in. She remarked that things had changed since they held a special for “their kind,” and the change she referred to was that she now “[expletive] hate queers.” That remark drew heavy criticism. Adding another layer of contradiction, the couple later posted a message asking others not to bodyshame them. It raised the question of why they felt free to insult others while expecting protection from similar treatment.
People Reacting to the Mississippi Cafe Owners’ Hate
Many people didn’t like what the Mississippi cafe owners said. Declaring publicly that you hate a community that is just being themselves might not sit well with many. This is why several comments dragged the couple. Some comments found it weird that there are still hateful people out there, as one person said, “wow. We are in 2025.. the hate needs to stop.” Another person then wrote, “The fact that there are people like this out there blows my mind. So much hate. Ugh.” Since it was the wife who said they hate queers, several comments focused on her. Some of them said, “She looks gross‼,” “You know she smells,” and “Lmaooo she looks like she smells like pepper and feet.”
Other comments claimed that the Mississippi couple was related. “But she loves her brother/husband,” one woman said. Someone even wrote, “Married for years… cousins for life!” Another woman from the same state also said that she never liked this cafe. “I’m from Long Beach…I never liked Darwell’s. It got a lot of hoopla from the time I was a kid, but IMO the food is very subpar. Kids would give me [expletive] bc I was hating on a successful place. Never been happier to have been & still a hater,” she wrote. There was one comment from a straight woman who didn’t agree with the couple as she said, “As a straight person, I think I can speak for all straight people. We don’t want ‘special’ treatment.” There should be no place for discrimination.
