Steven Spielberg, the visionary director who brought us films like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park, is fixing to throw his hat into the comic book movie realm. Spielberg is hoping to enter the DC Universe by taking the helm on a project based on the Blackhawk comic book. The film was recently announced as a collaboration between DC, Warner Bros., and Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment.

Spielberg would hopefully bring a bit of his magic to a rather dour DC movie universe, although there was no announcement if the Blackhawk film would stand on its own or enter the larger comic book cinematic universe. It could go either way: Blackhawk tells the story of a World War II flying squadron that battles the Axis powers as well as occasional supervillains. The group has also been brought into the realm of DC’s New 52, with Lady Blackhawk bringing the group into the modern comic era.

Steven Spielberg is fresh off of Ready Player One, which has made almost half a billion dollars at the box office. Part of the reason Spielberg would like to be attached to the film is because his longtime collaborator, David Koepp, is writing the screenplay. Koepp also wrote films like Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, all films directed by Steven Spielberg.

Speaking about working with Spielberg on Ready Player One, Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich said, “We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing Blackhawk to movie audiences worldwide.”

As of right now, details are scarce on Blackhawk, but we will keep you updated as more becomes available. DC has been busy with their cinematic universe, as there is also word out about who will be helming their upcoming Birds of Prey film.
