Following earlier controversies that drew public attention, many believed ICE would become more cautious in how they conducted operations in Minnesota. Instead, critics say the lack of consequences in previous cases appears to have emboldened agents, leading to yet another troubling encounter.
This latest incident took place in Minneapolis and involved a disabled woman who was on her way to a medical appointment. According to reports and video footage, the woman was heading to the United Methodist Church, which offers healthcare services on Tuesdays. At the same time, a protest was unfolding nearby in response to ICE activity at a residence in the area. The protest brought a heavy presence of demonstrators and ICE agents to the same stretch of street in Minnesota.
Because of her disability, the Minneapolis woman was attempting to park close to the clinic. That context, however, did not appear to matter to Minnesota ICE agents on the scene. Video shows the woman’s vehicle being surrounded as tensions escalated. The recording begins with a shouting match between the Minneapolis woman and ICE agents, though much of what is being said is difficult to hear due to loud car horns and surrounding noise.
What is clearly visible in the footage is the use of force. One Minnesota ICE agent is seen breaking the window of the woman’s car. Moments later, agents cut her seatbelt and forcibly pulled the disabled Minneapolis woman out of the vehicle. Despite her repeatedly stating that she was disabled, the agents proceeded to restrain her and place her in handcuffs. The video does not show any effort to accommodate her medical condition during the arrest.
As the situation unfolded, nearby Minnesota protesters began yelling at the ICE agents. Their shouts reflected anger and disbelief as they watched the disabled Minneapolis woman being taken into custody. Online reactions followed soon after, with many people expressing outrage at how the situation was handled. “It’s always women and children, never actual criminals,” one commenter wrote.
Others focused on the fact that several Minnesota ICE agents were wearing face coverings. Critics argued that the decision to obscure their identities only heightened public mistrust. One person commented, “If these agents were doing the right thing, they would not mind being on camera.
