Unfortunately, it’s not rare that places of worship might get targeted by unhinged individuals. The most recent example of this took place in New York. A driver, who could only be described as crazy, was filmed repeatedly ramming their car against a synagogue. This shocking scene happened at the Chabad Lubavitch world headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt, yet the video of the entire incident is still unbelievable. In the video shared widely, you could see a car hitting the synagogue’s doors and then driving backwards only to do the same thing all over again. People there could be heard in the background as they watched in shock the situation unfolding. The driver rammed the place enough times that one of the synagogue’s doors ended up falling to the ground.
The unhinged New York individual rammed the synagogue again. As he was ramming it for one final time, someone in the crowd was brave enough as they headed toward the car. After this final crash, the driver finally stopped and exited the car. That was when the crowd started confronting him. He was making excuses for the horrible act he just committed because he was saying, “I don’t know.” He even claimed that he slipped. Thankfully, two police officers appeared there quickly. They proceeded to arrest the guy as soon as the crowd pointed out that he was the driver. The cops then started leading him to their car. Of course, people there were justifiably angry. This explains why some of them started cursing the guy, while one person simply asked him, “Why?” The driver didn’t answer.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was also quick to respond to this hate crime. “Antisemitism has no place in our city, and violence or intimidation against Jewish New Yorkers is unacceptable,” he said according to BBC. What matters here is that everyone there was safe and that the criminal was apprehended.
People Reacting to the Shocking Scene in New York
People were absolutely furious at what happened to the synagogue in New York. Since the whole situation was so shocking, one person wrote, “This is unhinged. WTH.” Another person agreed and said, “Yeah, very strange behavior, the outfit, the explanation.” Someone else pointed out how the driver was unfazed. “Even just the look on his face at the end, unsettlingly calm,” they wrote. Others couldn’t believe that the driver tried to come up with an explanation for what happened. For example, one Redditor said, “He tried to act like the car slipped while continuing to reverse and go back forward.” Another Reddit user then replied, “Does he not realize everyone could see the (lack of) reverse lights??”
It even turned out that there is definitely something wrong with the New York driver because one person said, “This guy was on the Brighton Beach bound B last night around 5, got on at 7th Ave and was yelling about Jesus but also how he ‘hates minorities.’ Was still on when I got off a few stops later. I didn’t expect to recognize the man getting out of this car but it adds up.” Someone else believed that antisemitism has reached a new high as they wrote, “To see this level of antisemitism in NYC is putting a terrible feeling in my stomach. We are so deep in hate. Long way to get out of this… I can’t stop watching this I’m just so shocked. I’m born and raised here and this is just so out of control. What happened???” Something like this should have never happened.
