After turning down the role as the Dark Knight, Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly in talks with Sony Entertainment to play the main villain in the upcoming Spider-Man Homecoming sequel set to release sometime in 2019.

According to multiple media outlets, Gyllenhaal is in talks to play the villain known as Mysterio.

More information on the casting of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 could be released soon as Variety is also reporting that:

“Plot details are still unknown at this time, but sources say Marvel and Sony, who will co-produce the film, were looking to cast a new male and female lead, with the desire for the male lead to be played by an A-list actor. Actresses for the female role, which is expected to be someone in her 20s, are currently being auditioned by execs.”

Mysterio is a character that has yet to show up in any of the Spider-Man films. He was going to be in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 but of course, that movie never got into gear. In the canceled Spider-Man 4, Bruce Campbell would have played Mysterio. This version of the iconic Spider-Man character would have been portrayed as a comedic villain that was easily stopped by our friendly neighborhood web-slinger. Here is some concept art released from the canceled project showing what Mysterio could have looked like:

It seems that Sony and the MCU are definitely taking a different direction with this casting.

Gyllenhaal is a perfect fit for a villain role in the MCU. His role as Louis Bloom in the 2014 thriller Nightcrawler proves that he can give a menacing performance as one of Spider-Man’s most notorious villains.

Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, which is the working title for the film, is set to start production in June 2018 and will release sometime in Summer 2019.

What do you think about the possible casting of Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio? Who do you want to see in Homecoming 2? Let us know in the comments and be sure to follow us here at The Nerd Stash for all of your nerdy news and needs!
