Recently, Spike Lee has gotten quite a bit of attention after he showed up at the NBA All-Star Weekend wearing a black turtleneck with a white keffiyeh pattern and slung a matching bag across his body, the strap featuring the Palestinian flag. Many people on the internet criticized his actions, with one New York influencer even deciding to give him an unexpected “gift.”
Lizzy Savetsky has always been a very proud and loud pro-Israel influencer. The woman deemed Spike Lee’s appearance unacceptable and decided to do a stunt. She even recorded the whole thing, saying that she was actually his neighbor. The New York influencer then pulled out an Israeli flag and showed it off to the camera. She then stuffed it into his mailbox and smiled at the camera.
It’s unclear how Spike Lee reacted to the New York influencer’s stunt. Previously, however, he had explained his decision to show support for Palestine. He said that he was concerned about Palestinian children and civilians and emphasized his belief in human dignity for all humankind. He also clarified that he was not encouraging anyone to be violent toward Jewish people.
The internet was not impressed at all with the New York influencer’s stunt. Many remarked that she was out of line. “In the US it’s illegal to put things into mailboxes or take things out of mailboxes unless you are a member of the US Postal Service. This is why UPS, Amazon, or DHL leave the items at your door. With a mail slot in a gate like this it’s harder to say from my experience,” one user said.
Others said that the New York influencer was extremely short-sighted for blatantly recording this act and that she would likely get into trouble for it. “Good thing she got it on camera. Now he can charge her for harassment,” one Redditor wrote.
Some users sarcastically said that Spike Lee could just use the Israeli flag as a doormat or even toilet paper since she gave it to him for free. “Netanyahu is a war criminal and Ehud Barak abuses young girls, this woman is worried about what Spike Lee is wearing, social media has been bad for Zionists,” one commenter said.
