Outrage has erupted online after the US Department of Education decided to display several banners on its building in Washington DC. People have a problem with only one banner: Charlie Kirk’s. They believe that there is no reason why Kirk would be displayed there.
Apparently, these banners displayed in Washington, D.C. are part of the department’s education of 250 years since America’s founding. Next to the banners of these figures, there was a banner that read, “Empowering our States to tell the Stories of our Heroes in American Education.” Aside from Kirk, other figures displayed were Benjamin Franklin, Martin Luther King Jr., Booker T. Washington, Catharine Beecher, and Anne Sullivan.
According to the Guardian, the Department of Education said in a statement, “We are proud to honor visionary leaders whose contributions have shaped the future of education for generations.” Of course, many felt that Kirk didn’t deserve to be mentioned with all these figures. This made the publication also report, “The banner featuring Kirk has sparked criticism as the commentator was a polarizing figure who had made incendiary and often racist and sexist comments during his career. Some users online also noted that Kirk had also called for abolishing the Department of Education as recently as last year.”
People Reacting to Charlie Kirk’s Banner In Washington DC
People were absolutely furious that the Department of Education chose to display a banner of Charlie Kirk on its building in Washington DC. “What exactly did he do for America???” one person asked. This made another person reply, “Trained some ignorant individuals in hate and racism.” Someone else wrote, “I still don’t understand why they think he is important.” That was when one TikTok user replied, “They’re trying their hardest to galvanize Christian support for the GOP and their vote in the Midterms by making Kirk a martyr figure for the MAGA cause.” Someone else wrote, “Like Trump, he was a voice for their hatred. Now he’s a martyr for the dying relevancy of their values.”
Several more comments explained their dissatisfaction with Kirk’s banner. “he was a podcaster, and not a particularly good one,” one person wrote. A high school teacher even commented, “Texas HS teacher here, the posters are hung in my school for the Turning Point club.”
This made another person reply, “Would be a shame if they kept getting damaged and TPUSA had to replace them, thus wasting their precious dollars. Let’s hope it doesn’t become a trend because I’m sure it would quickly add up.”
