Marathon is finally here. While many players are just gearing up to land on Tau Ceti IV and survive the mission, Bungie is already preparing for post-launch challenges — specifically, how to deal with Marathon leakers. While we know Destiny 2 datamining has happened in the past, the studio is now in hardcore mode when it comes to its new extraction shooter, and is already issuing takedown warnings to anyone who wants to datamine anything from Marathon.
Bungie Won’t Go Easy With Marathon Leakers
The statement comes from the developer’s official X account, which mentions that the studio’s goal is to “preserve the experience and surprises for all our players.” Then it mentions that those who actually do any data mining will suffer dire consequences.
As such, we will be issuing takedowns for any datamined content that has not yet been revealed to players.
As you can see, Bungie is going to bring the hammer down on anyone who dares leak anything regarding Marathon, which is slightly new for the studio. As you know, much of the information regarding future Destiny 2 content gets leaked way ahead of time, so players thought it’d be the same for the extraction shooter. However, it seems that won’t be the case anymore.
Still, Bungie also mentioned that whatever content has been datamined already won’t be taken down, even saying that content creators can “do their thing.” Yet, it seems this might be the one and only case when the studio will allow it, and frankly, that is great.
While many players love knowing what’s coming to a game ahead of its launch, the truth is that it spoils the experience for other gamers who actually want to be surprised. We’re glad that Bungie is finally taking action against this, and we sort of hope this also happens to Destiny 2 in the future.
In the end, this all makes sense, as we know the studio has been teasing several things for Marathon, including a few secrets that many players believe are part of the Cryo Archive map. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to discover them because Marathon is already live, and we’re all ready to see what Tau Ceti IV has in store for us.
