American actor and film producer Robert De Niro is receiving backlash online following comments he made about President Donald Trump while encouraging people to show up for the ‘No Kings’ protest held on March 28. The 82-year-old, who lives in New York City, appeared in a video shared by the ACLU on TikTok, where he told viewers that Trump had to be “stopped.”

Robert De Niro says the only way Trump will be “stopped” is by people taking to the streets to “resist.”

“The only way that Trump is going to be stopped is by the people. Everybody has to get out there and resist, resist, resist. Period,” the actor said. He added that a strong turnout was important, noting that “the people are the ones that the administration has to answer to.”

De Niro also attended a ‘No Kings’ event in New York, where he took the stage and doubled down on his remarks. Addressing the crowd, he said, “There have been other presidents who have tested the constitutional limits of their power, but none have been such an existential threat to our freedoms and security. None except Trump. He must be stopped and he must be stopped now.”

While his views were praised by some, others reacted very differently online.

The Actor’s Remarks Were Strongly Criticized on X

The video was reposted to X by @OliLondonTV, where many users criticized his comments. One person wrote, “Imagine having all that money, yet is being paid to spread lies and hate.” Another said, “He’s lost his marbles.” A third commented, “Dude should be treated as a terrorist at this point,” while a fourth added, “Shouldn’t he respect the election’s result and wait until the next one instead of trying to make a ‘coup’?”

Some also defended Trump, saying they felt De Niro’s remarks were misplaced. “I love the irony of these people who say Trump is a threat to democracy, then also advocate ‘resisting’ a duly elected president who won the popular vote,” one comment read. Another asked, “Stop Trump from what, exactly? Seeing that the law is followed and that money laundering schemes are exposed?”

In a past interview with MSNBC, De Niro also voiced his support during the ‘No Kings’ demonstration held in October last year and said Trump should not be elected for a third term.
