Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has drawn strong online support after vetoing a bill that would have allowed a casino referendum in Fairfax County. The proposal had passed through the General Assembly but ultimately stopped at the governor’s desk.
“Local governing boards should lead on proposed casino development, as has happened in every locality that now has a casino,” said Gov. Spanberger in her statement today. “But in Fairfax County, the Board of Supervisors has explicitly opposed this legislation, and an overwhelming majority of the General Assembly members who represent Fairfax voted against it.”
The bill would have paved the way for a potential casino development in Fairfax County, a plan that had already faced opposition from local officials. According to the report, county supervisors had voiced concerns in the weeks leading up to the veto.
Fairfax Residents React to Veto
Online reaction, particularly on Reddit, leaned heavily in favor of the decision. One user wrote, “Nobody in Fairfax area wanted this,” while another added, “Thanks, Governor.”
Others framed the veto as a rare example of leadership aligning with public opinion, with one commenter stating, “More of this — more Democrat leaders listening to the people that they serve instead of corporate interests.”
Several responses also criticized how the bill moved through the legislature in the first place. One commenter called it “a horrible power play by the wealthy to put their casino where they want without regard to those that live there,” while another said it was “disturbing that both the Virginia state house and senate approved this bill.”
Still, not all reactions suggested the issue is settled. Some users expressed skepticism about what happens next, noting the possibility of lawmakers revisiting the proposal. One commenter warned that officials could “figure another loophole to reintroduce this casino,” while another claimed the legislature could “easily veto her veto.”
Despite those concerns, the immediate response online has largely framed the veto as a win for residents. As one user put it, “This is great! And her justification is spot on.”
The future of the proposal remains uncertain as the General Assembly is expected to reconvene, where lawmakers could attempt to override the decision.
