Bloodborne Anime Movie Announced, Sony Keeps It R-Rated to Stay ‘Very True’ to the Game

Bloodborne Anime Announced, Sony Keeps It R-Rated to Stay 'True' to the Game

Bloodborne fans have spent years asking for a remaster, a 60 FPS patch on the PS5, or even a long-overdue PC port. None of that has materialized, at least if we’re discounting emulators, but at least we are going back to Yarnahm through a completely different direction. According to Variety, Sony has officially announced a Bloodborne anime movie during CinemaCon in Las Vegas, running 13-16 April, 2026.

Reports said that the project is confirmed to be R-rated. Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch even said that it will stay ‘very true’ to the game’s gory and oppressive tone.

The animated film is being co-produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and Seán McLoughlin — better known as the internet celebrity JackSepticEye. Lyrical Animation is owned by Lyrical Media, an indie film production studio known for producing Bruiser, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, and The Death of Robin Hood. The animation studio is also attached to the upcoming Death Stranding: Mosquito, working together with Kojima Productions.

The game has previously been adapted into the limited-run comic The Death of Sleep and the webtoon Lady Maria and the Old Hunters. Nevertheless, Bloodborne isn’t the only FromSoftware universe leaping into new formats like anime and manga.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is also being adapted into the No Defeat anime series from Studio Qzil.la, slated for this year. Meanwhile, Elden Ring is in development as a live-action movie with A24, and has already been adapted into a 6-volume-long comedic manga, The Road to the Erdtree.

Considering the successes of Minecraft: The Movie and Super Mario Bros., it’s no surprise that Sony continues to mine its first-party catalog for adaptations. Helldivers and Horizon are both in the pipeline, with Jason Momoa reportedly in talks for the former. Not every attempt has landed, though. Until Dawn made the jump to the big screen much earlier, but failed to leave much of an impact, if any.

Former PlayStation Indies boss Shuhei Yoshida has said director Hidetaka Miyazaki holds a deep attachment to Bloodborne. That may just explain the lack of news about a remaster, remake, or port. Still, a Bloodborne anime adaptation might just be the next best thing, if you don’t mind just watching the hunt instead of participating in it.
