At a Tax Day event in Las Vegas, Nevada, President Donald Trump talked about his much-discussed Oval Office event from earlier in the week. Trump called the now-famous McDonald’s DoorDash delivery to the Oval Office “a little tacky” and “a little embarrassing,” but at the same time, he stood by it. He argued it was intentional, just a bit of political theater that got people watching.
The incident itself took place on Monday, April 13. Sharon Simmons, who is known online as the “DoorDash Grandma,” showed up at the White House. She is a grandmother of 10 from Fayetteville, Arkansas, and on that day, she wore a bright red DoorDash T-shirt, toting two big bags of McDonald’s. Trump met her at the Oval Office’s exterior door.
Cameras rolled as he handed her cash for a tip and chatted, pointing out how the “no tax on tips” policy had saved her family real money. Simmons drives for DoorDash to help pay for her husband’s cancer treatments.
The White House pushed the story on social media, using “LOVIN’ IT!” as the caption. Trump, grinning in front of reporters, asked, “This doesn’t look staged, does it?”
By Thursday in Nevada, Trump talked about how he felt looking back at that moment. “To be honest, it was a little tacky,” he admitted.
“They come up with these crazy ideas… we do these things in politics. They’re a little embarrassing. They’re a little tiny embarrassing, but we do them, and you win by landslides.”
Trump lumped the DoorDash delivery together with other attention-grabbing stunts from his campaign, like working the McDonald’s drive-thru or hitching a ride on a garbage truck. He made it clear these moments aren’t random. They are part of a strategy to craft the right image for voters. Even if he finds them awkward, he is not backing away from the playbook.
“So we gotta keep doing them,” he said.
Internet Reacts To Trump Calling the DoorDash White House Stunt ‘Tacky’ at Nevada Tax Day Event
The admission quickly set off a fresh wave of reactions online, with many interpreting Trump’s own words as the most revealing part of the entire episode. “You do realize that basically he just said…. That the American people are so stupid. They will vote for somebody that does something such as doordashing mcdonald’s…. That’s what he just said,” one person wrote.
Others were less surprised. “I mean yeah if u thought it was a genuine interaction idk what to say,” a user commented. Some reactions focused on the broader picture rather than the spectacle itself. “How about you fix the health insurance problem and then people like that won’t have to worry about doing doordash,” one comment read.
A few viewers were almost impressed by the candor. “The sheer commitment to the bit is something else. most people stop at a photo op, but he really leaned into the delivery app aesthetic,” a user wrote.
Others directed their frustration at those who defended the moment without question. “All the MAGAs defending him in this post is wild. He is literally telling ALL OF YOU that you are beneath him and that he wouldn’t interact with you if it weren’t needed to win him an election,” one person wrote.
Depending on who you ask, his admission feels either refreshingly honest or an unguarded slip. But one thing is not up for debate: speaking so openly just put a fresh spotlight on the stunt, and set off another round of buzz online.
