In Oklahoma, attention has recently centered on Senate Bill 504, legislation that seeks to ban marriage involving individuals under 18. While several representatives voted to ban it, Lt. Governor candidate J.J. Humphrey voted against it, which shocked many people in the state. However, instead of letting the topic die or move on, the candidate recently uploaded a video, doubling down on his stance toward this bill, and quickly caused even more backlash.
For context, Bill SB504 aimed to ban underage marriage because, as you know, people in Oklahoma could get married at the age of 16 if they had permission from a parent. However, this new bill completely banned it. While everyone at the Senate, House Civil Judiciary Committee, and more places voted to ban it, the only person against it was Lt. Governor candidate J.J Humphrey.
When people found out about this, they were shocked and quickly started criticizing the representative for being the only one against the bill. And now, a couple of days later, something new has happened: candidate Humphrey uploaded a video to his YouTube channel, doubling down on his stance.
In a new video, Humphrey refers to critics as “gaslighters” who he says are trying to cause him harm or trouble. He also references his vote against a bill related to marriage, stating that in some cases involving underage pregnancy, individuals should have a say in whether marriage is permitted.
J.J Humphrey Is Still Facing Backlash From Several Oklahoma Residents
While Humphrey has explained his stance on video now, several Redditors from Oklahoma still don’t agree with the candidate’s stance.
“If you can’t take the time to read the bill and comprehend it. I really don’t want you as governor.“
“That’s a conservative for you, folks.“
A few other Redditors aimed their complaints toward the Republican party, mentioning several of the allegations we’ve heard in the past years.
“Well, yeah, he’s a Republican.“
“Republicans cannot escape the allegations.“
In the end, it seems that this has caused way more backlash than anyone thought, and the recent video didn’t help either. There are also many more people criticizing him in the Reddit thread, with some even urging others to call his office to complain.
