Donald Trump spoke about Social Security during an event in Florida on Friday. However, his remarks shifted when he treated a crowd of retirees to a back-and-forth impression of Rep. Ilhan Omar and her alleged brother. Those attending did not appear to mind the comments, while others had much more to say.
The video of the remarks circulated on social media, including a post shared by the Breaking911 account, where it drew thousands of views and comments.
The event focused on Trump’s proposal to eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits, part of what he has called the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” But it quickly swerved into a long attack on Omar, Somalia, and Somali immigrants living in Minnesota. He described Somalia as facing crime and instability and criticized Omar during the remarks. “She comes here from Somalia and tells us how to run the United States,” Trump told the crowd. “Get the hell out—what a phony.”
Then he waded into the old marriage accusation involving Omar and her second husband. “I believe she married her brother, which is totally illegal—although, it’s a lovely couple, actually, but it’s a little bit on the illegal side,” Trump said. Then he launched into a mock dialogue, miming both sides: “‘Darling, I love you very much.’ ‘Goodnight, brother. Let’s go to bed.’” He wrapped it up by asking the audience, “Isn’t she despicable?”
The claim has circulated since 2016, but no verified evidence has been established. Omar has denied the allegation, and no charges have been filed. After Trump’s speech, Omar fired back, calling his rant “unhinged” and saying that it would spark more outrage if it didn’t come from “a criminal who has 34 felony convictions.”
Internet Reacts To Trump’s Florida Speech Targeting Ilhan Omar
Online reactions to the speech were mixed. Some found it entertaining and made their position clear. “He is our funniest President ever. Full stop,” one person wrote, while another added, “This is the one thing I agreed with him — throw them out if you want to save America.”
Some commenters questioned whether the claim could lead to defamation concerns. “P.S. if it wasn’t true she could sue for defamation,” one comment read.
On the other side, several people pushed back on the substance of the claims. “Literally zero proof of this. In fact, it’s been debunked over and over again. I don’t like that woman but she should sue him over this just like he’s done to so many others,” one person wrote.
Others focused on the tone of the remarks themselves. “That’s not politics, that’s straight up playground talk on a national stage. Donald Trump going after Ilhan Omar like this doesn’t sound tough or clever — it just sounds reckless and unnecessary,” one comment read. And one observation cut across the whole debate: “So he can say anything he wants about anyone, but soon as Kimmel starts talking he *expletive* up.”
This is far from the first time the two have clashed publicly, and it’s likely to keep fueling the same debate over how far political rhetoric should go.
