California Residents Debating on Whether Billionaires Should Pay a One-Time Tax To Cover Recent Healthcare Cuts: ‘A Forever Wealth Tax’

To pay or not to pay

One of the most-talked-about topics lately has been healthcare, especially all the cuts that have affected Californians across the state. Not long ago, we learned that California is taking a “citizens-only” stance later in the year, where many immigrants will lose their Medi-Cal benefits, but it seems the topic didn’t end there. Today, an article has sparked an online debate about whether billionaires in the state should pay a tax to cover the recent healthcare cuts, and, as you can imagine, many people quickly backed the idea, while others started asking for even more.

Two Takes: Should California pass a one-time wealth tax on billionaires to cover healthcare cuts?

The original article comes from the San Francisco Chronicle, which we’ll link here so you can give it a read. The article mentions that a group in the state has been seeking to impose a one-time 5% tax on California billionaires, with around 90% of the funds going toward restoring some of the healthcare cuts and the rest to education and state food assistance programs.

The above report conducted a thorough investigation of what would happen if the tax were approved and showed its positive and negative impacts. However, reactions on Reddit were more varied, as several users began sharing their points of view on this proposal. While many think the one-time tax could be a good idea and would benefit the state a lot, several other Redditors think this isn’t enough and that billionaires should be paying even more to help those around California.

Debate Erupts on Reddit on Whether to Impose a Tax on Billionaires or Not

Based on the comments, most people agree that billionaires should be taxed. However, some believe that it should not be a one-time thing. Instead, it should be something permanent because those with money should “give the money up.”

“No. It should pass a forever wealth tax on billionaires, but politics is the art of the possible. This will suffice at the present moment.“

“No, a one-time tax is a bad idea. Make it permanent.“

On the other hand, some Redditors are concerned that this tax would force billionaires to leave and probably jeopardize the state’s economy.

“You’re the one begging for their tax dollars. Sounds like a pretty big dependency to me.“

“And if, for some reason, the income of that tax decreases because of people moving out of the state, the government can always tax the middle class.“

In the end, this still hasn’t happened, even though there are several supporters behind the proposal, which has gathered enough signatures to be included on the November ballot. So, as many have mentioned, it is only a matter of waiting and seeing whether it happens, and, if so, how billionaires and the state will react.
