A police officer is under fire after stopping in the middle of the highway in Nebraska, causing a truck following behind to smash into the back of the vehicle. The video went viral as millions watched in horror as the cop abruptly stopped, without any lights or indication that they were doing so. While a few believed the truck driver wasn’t paying enough attention to slow down sooner, most believe the police officer is to blame.

@CrazyyHub initially uploaded the video of the police car stopping on the highway, while Reddit user Affectionate_Hat5835 shared the clip on r/dashcams, where over ten thousand people were just as in disbelief at what happened. For context, the cop had appeared to be stopping over a cooler that had dropped in the middle lane, but the truck behind couldn’t react fast enough due to its speed and size to avoid rear-ending the police car.

“That cop has no one to blame but himself for that…” remarked @CrazyyHub, and countless shared the same sentiment. “Why no police lights? They turn them on for everything!” exclaimed a Redditor. “I was literally told that they don’t have to turn them on when responding to any form of call,” said another in response. “So there is no way to hold them accountable for anything they do.”

Some Commenters Actually Believe the Truck Driver Was at Fault for the Accident

On the other hand, others added that the police officer might not have had enough time to react and turn on their lights after noticing the cooler in the middle of the road. Some even defended the cop, saying the truck driver was actually at fault. “Truck started braking too late and probably was not keeping large enough distance too,” said a commenter on X, though they were quickly met with heavy backlash over their opinion.

In the end, the whole situation was too chaotic to thoughtlessly throw blame around. A large object, the cooler, was blocking a highway lane, and the police officer and the truck driver had little time to react, resulting in a nasty crash. Though, if someone is to blame, some might agree with one Redditor’s comment: “Whoever failed to adequately strap down the cooler is who I’d sue.”
