‘This is Exactly What I Want My Tax Dollars to Go Towards’: Florida Woman Praises Daycare Program for Unhoused Families

I wish we could see this everywhere

A Florida woman is praising a daycare assistance program at her daughter’s school designed to support families experiencing homelessness. According to her account, the initiative helps ensure children can continue attending daycare regardless of their housing situation. She described the program as an important resource for families facing difficult circumstances and said it could make a meaningful difference for many children in need.

Ayanna (@untouchableyann) shared that her child’s school implemented a new and useful daycare program. As she says, “they’re allowing unhoused people to bring their babies to the daycare for 10 hours a day, five days a week.” The program is reportedly offered at no cost to qualifying families. Ayanna is super happy about the news, stating “I love that.”

Ayanna goes on to explain that the babies at the daycare are now getting several things. She says they’re fed throughout the day, getting formula, and they’re getting baths from daycare workers. The workers wash their clothing for them and they get to enjoy time in a classroom around toys and children. What’s not to love about a social program that gives back to the community in this way? Ayanna states, “I don’t know who’s paying for it. I don’t know if the government’s giving them money.” She goes on to say, “If it is the government, this is exactly what I want my tax dollars to go towards.”

Ayanna said that it’s possible the money they spend on daycare is going toward this program. To that, she says, “I will keep paying my $265 a week.” For ten hours, she says that the parents of these babies can live their lives. That means that they could be “looking for a job” or even “at their job.” Ayanna says all she cares about is that “these babies are taken care of.” On top of that, she adds, “These parents are at least given the time and opportunity to not have to worry about if their children are getting fed. To not have to worry about their children being subjected to the elements.” This program creates stability that so many unhoused parents need so they can get back on their feet.

Commenters primarily agreed with Ayanna on how useful a program like this could be. As one commenter mentioned, “Life even if they use it for nothing more than a chance to BREATHE. Relax. Regulate. Find some peace. Like that’s not going to translate to momentum later? It doesn’t have to be that they drop off and immediately start the grind.” Another commenter shared, “I’m child free by choice, but I hope that some of my tax dollars go to something similar in my area.”

Ayanna’s video opened up many important conversations about where U.S. tax dollars go and showing support to those in need. It gives a sense of community to see commenters come together over this issue. One commenter said it best: “I want this everywhere. Not a single child should be homeless, food insecure, or raised in conditions that don’t allow them to thrive. Parents shouldn’t have to break themselves to survive.”
