A woman crashed out during the Calaveras County Fair in California, hurling racial slurs over being called a grandma. In a viral clip posted on Reddit, the middle-aged woman was surrounded by a couple of teenagers, and she was exchanging words with a young Black man, who was seemingly mocking her combat skills. Those who were with the young man could be heard laughing at the woman in the background as she threatened to lay him out. While laughing at her threat, the boy called the woman a “grandma.”
As though triggered by the word, the woman launched at him, attempting to kick him. However, her balance got the best of her as she almost stumbled. This roused even more laughter among the boys and their friends. A man who appeared to be mediating held the woman back as he shouted profanities at the boy for calling her a grandma. The boy defended himself, saying that she had called him the N-word. In another scene, as they exited the fair, the boy walked toward the woman and a younger woman, presumed to be her daughter, who was carrying a baby on one arm and pushing a stroller on the other. He warned the woman not to use racial slurs on him anymore, as the younger woman blamed him for the altercation. The older woman then added that she would use the racial slur on the young man because he called her a grandma.
Public Condemnation Erupts Over The Violent Overreaction To An Innocent Remark
Many users stormed the comments with outright condemnation of the incident, characterizing it as an abuse of the power dynamics. Many users pointed out that the minor’s assumption was justifiable.
A user wrote: “Totally unhinged. She wouldn’t have said that to an adult. Racists are always the biggest cowards being [Expletive] to people they think they could win against in a fight or don’t think will fight them.” Another asked why the woman reacted so violently, pointing out that the child being carried by the younger woman could be assumed to be her grandchild. A second Redditor agreed, claiming that the young boy’s assumption was not baseless, as the younger woman appeared to be her daughter.
Another individual expressed concern about how racial abuse is increasingly treated as an acceptable social reaction without consequences. Some users turned to sarcasm; the first one joked about the attempt to equate the word “grandma” with the traumatic racial slur, and the second one mocked that the authorities be summoned to save the woman from the word “grandma.”
In conclusion, the reactions show that the public is not excusing racial slurs regardless of age or situation.
