A New York man says a Target run left him feeling humiliated after he was chased down outside by security and asked to hand over his receipt following a checkout mix-up. He ended up returning his entire $500 haul and confronting a manager on camera. The clip has TikTok debating whether the store owed him an apology, or whether the situation could have ended the moment he showed his receipt.

Sick of it’ Shopping in NYC as a black man is an extreme sport and I’m sick of it. If it’s not the mom and pop shops discriminating against us and selling us bullshit it’s the cooperation threatening us with STATE VIOLENCE for shopping with them. Going out shopping as a single black man is too difficult. Too much disappointment. Too much annoyance just to shop in my own country. I don’t know who to give my money to anymore. No one deserves another dollar. The #Boycott continues. #Target #BlackManShopping There are not a lot of places for a black man to shop safely in NYC without being humiliated. I’m striving to get to the lifestyle where I trust things being delivered to my doorstep so I can avoid these issues. Because going outside existing seems these troubles come regardless.

Posted to TikTok by @michaelgenejacobs, the video opens as the creator is already returning his items. Speaking off camera, he says he was ignored for five minutes after his shopping cart malfunctioned and that “everyone wants to embarrass and humiliate” him while he was struggling.

He says a security guard then chased him outside and demanded his receipt. This came after he had spent over $500 in the store. “You don’t shop where people disrespect you,” he says. He adds that Target is one of the only major retailers available to him in New York City.

Then the video cuts to the New York man speaking with a manager. The creator asks him to review the security footage and see how he was treated. He also points to an ongoing boycott as proof that the tension between his community and the store already existed.

Later, the manager asks him to stop recording, saying she can’t discuss the incident on camera due to company policy. The creator continues filming, saying he’ll finish what he has to say and stop recording afterward.

The Bigger Debate Over Target

Several commenters supported the New York creator’s decision to return everything and encouraged him to take the complaint further. “Escalate this to their district manager. I’m sorry this happened,” one wrote. Another added, “I’m proud of you for returning everything, now sue for harassment.”

Some viewers connected the incident directly to the boycott mentioned in the video. “You are aware, we’re boycotting Target for the exact reason you were profiled,” one commenter wrote. Another said the moment only confirmed why they’d already stopped shopping there.

Not every comment focused on the store. One viewer pushed back specifically on the creator’s remarks about the register employee’s English skills, arguing it was unfair to criticize someone for not speaking the language while also expecting that person to be employed.

Other users were more skeptical of how the confrontation escalated at all. “Why not just show the receipt,” one asked. A few viewers offered retails alternatives, arguing Target isn’t the only retailer serving New York City despite the creator’s claim.

For many commenters, the receipt was beside the point. Some read the whole thing as one more reason Black shoppers should steer clear of Target, while others thought the creator’s refusal to cooperate, and his jabs at employees, crossed a line of their own.
