A fifth-grade teacher in Missouri has gone viral after documenting what she said was her first day of panhandling during summer break on TikTok. The woman, who lives in Kansas City, said it was a “side quest” she recently undertook to open conversations about how much educators spend out of their own pockets on students. As of the time of writing, the clip has generated more than 800,000 views.

Teacher says she’s “broke” on Day 1 of summer break… so she hits the street with a panhandling sign.

She made $103 in just 90 minutes and says she’s going back every day.

In the TikTok video, the teacher can be seen standing near an intersection while holding up a cardboard sign that read, “Day 1 panhandling as a teacher on summer break!” On the back, she included her Cash App and Venmo information.

The woman said that after she spent roughly an hour and a half interacting with people passing by, she was able to make around $103, which she added was “way more” than what she expected. She then ended the video on a happy note, promising to also take viewers along for her Day 2.

At first, reactions to the video were heavily divided. While some left supportive comments for the teacher, many others saw it as a controversial way for an educator to earn extra money. One person mocked, “Teacher teaching your kids but cant teach themselves how to earn a 2nd income without begging 🥲😂.” Another said, “You’d think a teacher would be smart enough to budget her money to get through the summer break. Sad.”

Some suggested she should either find an alternative side job or leave teaching completely. “Why not do something meaningful like tutoring? This is mindless and idiotic,” one commenter wrote. Someone else remarked harshly, “Change your profession and get a life so kids don’t interact with you.”

Following the backlash, the teacher shared another video explaining that her goal had not been to make people uncomfortable but to highlight what educators contribute behind the scenes. According to her, many educators regularly spend their own money on books, classroom supplies, snacks, hygiene items, and food for students without reimbursement.

“We care so deeply about our students and our families that we are willing to do that,” the teacher said. “Nobody was obligated to donate any of the money that they did but I had lots of conversation with each person who did donate money about where that money would be going and how it would benefit my students in my classroom.”

The follow-up video provided additional context about the circumstances, leading some people to applaud her for being creative. One netizen commented, “I love everything about this and you🤣🤣.” Another wrote, “You might be on to something. This could be a way for us to clear our lists of classroom needs,” while a third added, “This is brilliant. We need to all unite and hit every corner. It would be hilarious.”

Some also defended her, with one viewer writing, “Touch grass people not that deep! Insane how strangers are mad at her hustling.”

The woman’s second day appeared to go well too, as she said she received $51 in donations.
