A Florida man ended up leaving an outdoor cafe following a disagreement with another individual over his phone calls. The person who recorded and posted the exchange online said the man had been quietly working with headphones on when an elderly woman told him he was being “rude” and asked him to move. The clip went viral on TikTok within 24 hours after it was uploaded, racking up more than 2 million views, though many netizens have remained divided over the incident.
According to the TikToker who shared the video, the man had been sitting alone at a table next to hers, minding his business and answering what she believed were work-related calls. She claimed he had not been bothering anyone before two women and children arrived and chose to sit at a table adjacent to him despite other seating being available.
After a while, one of the women, whom the TikToker referred to as an “entitled Karen,” reportedly turned to the man and asked him if he could sit somewhere else because she felt it was “inconsiderate and rude” for him to be on his phone in a public place. The TikToker said she intervened at that moment to remind the elderly woman that the man had been sitting there before her group arrived. However, the woman continued pushing for him to leave.
Eventually, the man chose to move from the area. As he packed up his belongings, he told the elderly woman that she was not setting a “good example” for the children in her company. He added that he had a 4-year-old son himself and wouldn’t want him caught in a situation like that.
The woman recording the video also confronted the older woman, telling her her “entitlement is insane.”
Netizens Split Over the Florida Cafe Dispute
In the comments under the TikTok post, some viewers sided with the man, arguing that he had every right to remain where he was. “How is it rude to be on your phone? I’m so confused,” one person wrote. Another said, “There’s genuinely no difference between him speaking through headphones and speaking to someone in person at the cafe. I will never understand these reactions.” A third added, “It’s a PUBLIC space! Stay home if you want to dictate people as per your wishes.”
Some also felt the man should not have left. “It’s more disappointing that he left and just reinforced the Karen’s behavior,” one comment read. Someone else wrote, “I would have rotted in that spot lol. I’m not moving.”
Not everyone agreed, however. Some argued that taking phone calls in a cafe can be disruptive to others. “So people think that loud public phone calls are cool now? When did that change?” one commenter asked. Another remarked, “Sorry, it’s annoying.
