A woman in Nashville, Tennessee, underwent an eye test and, to her shock, discovered she had terrible vision. The results were so serious that the optometrist wouldn’t allow her to drive home until she got contacts. Users online were very concerned, and even bashed the woman for how nonchalantly she told her story.
Marina Jones shared her eyesight story on TikTok. She is a very popular content creator and a lung transplant recipient, and she often shares lifestyle content, most of which involves her driving. The video attached above quickly became one of her most popular recent clips, garnering 1.8 million views, 263,100 likes, and more than 2,200 comments.
From the get-go, the Tennessee woman said that she “can’t see” and that “it’s gotten worse” as she can no longer see at the movies. Despite this, her motivation for getting her eyes checked was actually some “cute vintage Dior glasses” at Poshmark.
The clip then cuts to Marina at the actual eye exam. She captioned that it was not going well. Apparently, the optometrist asked her to read the letters shown. She responded, “What letters?“
Disappearing Letters
Later in the clip, she explained that the letters just “disappeared” when switching from one eye to the other. All she could see was white, according to her.
Believing she was going to get a quick prescription for her glasses, she ended up staying at the optometrist far longer than she expected. According to her, the woman who guided her through her eye exam told her, “I literally don’t feel safe on the road with you leaving here without contacts.”
“I’m not letting you drive home,” the woman apparently told Marina.
The optometrist fit the Tennessee influencer for contacts. The eye exam revealed that her left eye is -4, while her right eye is -1,75.
“So basically I couldn’t see,” Marina said. Then, she said that driving home with her contacts was “weird” because she could see “all the lines.” She added, “It looks like I’m driving in a video game. So crazy.”
Drawing Backlash
The clip sparked multiple responses online.
Most viewers, some of them aware of her past content involving driving, were shocked and even angry after learning about her vision, or lack thereof. One said, “This isn’t even cute or funny. That’s literally reckless driving.” Another one commented, “There’s NO WAY one can safely drive like that.”
The backlash just continued, as more heated responses started to pour in. One person wrote, “I hope the police see this.” Another one added, “This is so dangerous and selfish.”
Marina, despite the uproar, continued posting her content as usual. She even vlogged her first day of “being able to see.”
