Getting a drink at a fast food restaurant would primarily use a trust system in the past. You’d pay for your fountain drink and then go get whatever soda you wanted. Unfortunately, customers have breached the trust of fast food giants, and now these companies are making it difficult for you to double up on drinks. One Florida woman shows what she had to go through to receive a drink at a restaurant recently.
Shandeia (@shandeeeezy) recorded a TikTok video at her local Streak ‘n Shake in Gainesville, Florida. She shows what they’re doing to keep people from getting multiple drinks from the fountain when they only paid for one. In the video, she goes over to the drink machine and tries to push it in to receive her soda. But nothing comes out.
Then, Shandeia looked at her receipt and saw that there was a QR code for her fountain soda. You scan the code on a machine linked to the soda fountain. When it scans, you’re permitted to fill it to the amount that you paid for. She says, “As soon as I fill my [expletive], they cut me right off.”
Shandeia was shocked that the restaurant went to these lengths to ensure that they’re not being cheated on drinks. She looks around the restaurant and exclaims, “Crazy!” Then, she adds, “Times are different.” As she stated on her own video, she has never been to a restaurant before where they make you scan a QR code to turn the machine on.
Commenters shared Shandeia’s confusion and outrage over this issue and how it was handled. As one commenter stated, “It’s crazy how greedy companies have become.” Another TikToker mentioned, “Mind you they could have just put it behind the counter and filled it up for us.” One commenter even simply stated, “That would absolutely be my last time at that establishment.”
Other TikTokers found hilarity in the situation and what companies will do to protect themselves from losing a few dollars to customers. As one commenter quipped, “Two step verification for a drink.” Another pointed out, “Mind you, those syrup bags for the soda costs literal cents per bag for these big corporations.”
Commenters continue to share their opinions on what they saw in Shandeia’s video. It has opened discussion about how restaurants are handling things in our modern times, and how expensive things have become.
