A man in Georgia, claiming to be a non-citizen, was horrified after discovering a gun inside his rental car from Hertz and reached out to the Internet for help. Going by Purna_sai on Reddit, the man sought suggestions on r/legaladvice, where he explained his primary concerns. “I am not a citizen, and finding a gun in a traffic stop or something could put me in jail,” Purna_sai wrote.
According to Purna_sai’s post, he found the gun after opening his rental car’s passenger door and spotting “something shiny under the seat.” What was even more alarming was that the gun was allegedly loaded. After he called 911, the police confiscated the weapon and his information.
Purna_sai said he also reported what had happened to Hertz, but still wants to know what Reddit thinks he should do. Among the hundreds who upvoted his post, several dozen shared their thoughts, many of whom were confused about what exactly he wanted to happen now.
“What is the objective? It sounds like the important part of this has been handled,” remarked a commenter, pointing out how OP had already contacted the police and Hertz, leaving little room for further action.
“For now, this is a customer service issue and not a legal issue,” added another user; they continued, noting that even though “something horrible could have happened,” there’s nothing else Hertz is supposed to do for him. “You can hope for a voucher for a future free/discounted rental or similar,” they suggested.
Things Could Have Gone Horribly Wrong for the Georgia Man, Redditor Says
On the flip side, one Redditor was shocked at how nonchalant many people were about someone finding a deadly weapon in their rental. “A non-US citizen with a concealed firearm could have gone horrifically wrong on so many levels,” the user wrote. “It 100% shouldn’t be just dropped as though all is well that ended well.”
They continued, explaining that Hertz most certainly needs to take more accountability for its customers, given that there could have been serious trouble if OP hadn’t found the gun. Not to mention, whoever was responsible for cleaning out the rental prior to lending it to Purna_sai did a questionable job, as they missed a firearm that was visible upon opening the front passenger door.
The objectively best advice from Redditors is likely from a commenter saying to swap out the car as soon as possible. “Who knows if anything else was left behind?” they suggested.
