Abortion has always been a sensitive topic, so you can imagine how much more controversial it is when magnified by an online announcement, which is what happened with YouTube and influencer Jesse Ridgway. The New Jersey-based YouTuber says he and his wife have been flooded with death threats after publicly revealing they ended a pregnancy following a prenatal diagnosis indicating their unborn child had Down syndrome.
Jesse Ridgway, known online as Jesse Ridgway from New Jersey, shared the deeply personal decision with his millions of followers this week, describing the experience as one of the most painful moments of his life. Ridgway and his wife, Ashley, had announced their pregnancy earlier this year and said they expected the news to be great as “we felt this was gonna be a nice little ray of sunshine” for their growing family.
Instead, the couple found themselves facing a difficult medical decision after testing suggested their baby had Trisomy 21, commonly known as Down syndrome. In a series of social media posts and videos, Ridgway explained that the diagnosis led to extensive conversations with doctors, genetic counselors, relatives, and friends. The couple ultimately chose to terminate the pregnancy, a decision they described as heartbreaking and emotionally exhausting.
“The choice was not made lightly,” Ridgway wrote, adding that both he and Ashley were devastated by the outcome. The influencer later detailed concerns about the health challenges often associated with Down syndrome. “Things have been pretty dark for a while for us, and we felt this was gonna be a nice little ray of sunshine, and it’s not,” says Ridgway. Learning more about the risks played a major role in the couple’s decision-making process.
An overwhelming backlash
While many followers offered messages of sympathy and support, the public reaction quickly became polarized. Ridgway revealed that he and his wife have received a wave of hostile messages since sharing their story, including threats of violence and accusations that they had acted immorally. In a follow-up statement, he said he was shocked by the intensity of the backlash.
“I’ve never seen such hate and vitriol for two people grieving the loss of an unborn child and making an impossible decision,” he wrote. The controversy has reignited debate online over reproductive rights, prenatal testing, and the ethical questions surrounding diagnoses of genetic conditions before birth. Some commenters even wanted the couple improsined, “Throw both their [expletive] in prison…didn’t even have the child a chance.”
Others offered a more level-headed opinion on the matter, claiming “This is an incredibly difficult and personal decision. I don’t think it’s fair for strangers to judge.” One X commenter understood the struggle, “Supporting them 100%... Better to make the hard call early than struggle for life. Parenting special needs isn’t for everyone and that includes me,” while others made some extreme comparisons, “So if it were up to them every person with Down syndrome shouldn’t be alive… Abortion is basically eugenics.”
