A Black man in Florida confronted a White customer inside a restaurant after the customer allegedly made a racist remark.
In a Facebook post, the man described what he said took place. According to his account, he was sitting inside the restaurant when he heard the customer use the phrase “chimping out.” The phrase has been described by people as a racist term directed toward Black individuals. In response, the man voiced his objections, after which the customer apologized to him.
The man responded, “Don’t say it at all.” According to his account, as the confrontation continued, one of the customer’s friends intervened and allegedly threatened to knock his glasses off. The man then began recording the interaction and later shared the videos online.
In the first video, the customer’s friend could be heard telling the Black man that he was “playing victim.” The friend also said he was attempting to deescalate the situation. “He apologized. You are the one keeping it rolling,” the friend said in defense of the customer. The man then responded, “I didn’t threaten you.” In reply, the friend said, “Dude just shut your [expletive] mouth.”
When a staff member asked what had happened, the friend said that the customer had said something he should not have said and had already apologized three times. “You don’t keep talking [expletive] to the rest of the table. We had nothing to do with it,” the friend then told the man.
In another video, the customer approached the man and spoke with him directly. He said that he had used the phrase “chimping out” because he had heard it online. He also stated that the remark was not directed at the Black man. The customer added that he had already apologized and asked why the man continued raising the issue afterward. “What good is gonna come from that?” he then asked.
The exchange between the man and the customer’s friend continued throughout the video. Toward the end of the footage, the man said that he would let the matter go. In the caption of his Facebook post, he also reflected on the situation and shared a broader perspective on the encounter.
“Now that I have a cooler head, I think the guy may have been repeating something he saw online. Maybe he didn’t understand how ugly it sounded out loud. But there was still no reason for his buddy to threaten me. Could I have remained calmer? Maybe. But when I heard ‘chimping out,’ I couldn’t believe someone would say that in public, especially in a restaurant where a Black person was sitting right there,” he wrote.
Viewers Support Black Florida Man After Restaurant Incident
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers sided with the Black Florida man and said they understood why he was upset after hearing the phrase. Some also criticized the customer for his remarks and questioned his friends’ defense of him during the confrontation. “They love excusing and justifying their behavior,” one person wrote. Another person said, “Since he apologized for being racist 3 times it’s ok.”
More viewers criticized the customer and his friends following the incident. One person wrote, “they are so triggered by being held accountable for their racism.” Another said, “You absolutely do talk ish to the table, the entire table because he should have shown the same energy to his friend.” Someone else added, “They offend you and want to control how you react why is it the first word that comes out of your mouth having a dispute with a person of colour.”
The video prompted discussion online about the use of phrases that some people view as racist and the impact such language can have on others. It also led to conversations about whether individuals should hold friends accountable for remarks they consider offensive or discriminatory.
