A California man made a startling discovery after he found a worm living inside his wooden cutting board. Shockingly, he shared that he had first noticed something funny with the board back in September 2024, meaning that worms had been eating through his kitchen item for nearly two years.
Rafael Fernandez shared the troublesome discovery on TikTok. In the past, he has shared some travel content with his followers, but the clip above and those that followed became his biggest. The first clip garnered 3.6 million views, 299,900 likes, and more than 5,600 comments.
The California man detailed that he had bought a wooden cutting board “like a year ago.” Throughout this time, he would keep it in his counter, but occasionally, he would hear a “weird sound.” Thinking it was uneven, he eventually put it away.
Eventually, the man decided to take it out and inspect it. He was surprised to find sawdust all over it, as seen in the clip. Two big holes can also be spotted in the video, but what drew his attention, and that of the millions that saw his video, was that a worm was inside the wooden cutting board.
“What the [expletive]? That’s crazy,” Rafael said as he pointed at the worm. “How the [expletive]? What? I knew I wasn’t crazy.”
While the clip itself was shocking enough, the California man followed it up with a text message revealing that he had been hearing the “weird sound” since at least September 2024. He also attached a video of his yet intact wooden cutting board. The weird sound could be heard, which turned out to be a worm eating the board from the inside out.
Worm Reactions
The video sparked multiple responses.
Some viewers were in shock at the sight of the worm. One said, “I believed you. You didn’t have to introduce me to him.” Another one commented, “My plastic cutting board from the dollar tree would never.”
Others were even trying to identify what type of worm lived in the California man’s cutting board. One wrote, “That is the larvae of a powder post beetle. Congratulations, I guess.” Finally, some poked fun at the surprise, with one viewer saying, “On a positive note, at least you know it’s real wood.”
In the end, Rafael discarded the wooden cutting board. Therefore, the worm will no longer annoy him with its eating habits.
