New York doesn’t do quiet celebrations, and this was no different. Somewhere within a two-million-strong parade crowd, a fan’s brush with danger turned into something the internet immediately latched onto. The clip is brief, but already impossible to scroll past without exclamatory thoughts. By the time he made it back to his feet, this story wasn’t about his well-being at all.
The incident occurred during Thursday’s Knicks ticker-tape parade through New York City, where approximately two million fans flooded Lower Manhattan to honor the team’s first NBA championship in 53 years, and where Mayor Zohran Mamdani was minutes away from presenting the team with the Keys to the City.
Amidst a massive crowd, one fan was captured collapsed on an exterior elevation ledge. An entourage of helpers rushed in, including a woman dressed in blue, apparently performing CPR on the man on the ledge.
The specifics of the medical emergency are not known. But as the man begins to regain consciousness, he repeatedly leans toward the woman who helped him, attempting to kiss her. She repeatedly shoves and moves away from his advances while trying to keep him calm.
The men behind them begin to react in shock, with some intervening and others reaching for their cell phones.
A second angle of the encounter has since surfaced online, adding fuel to a clip that had already pulled in millions of views.
Internet Reacts to New York Knicks Parade Kiss Attempt
Commenters reacting to the footage largely focused on the contrast between the woman’s actions and the man’s response upon waking.
“It’s beyond parody at this point. It’s just depressing,” one commenter wrote. Another drew a pop-culture comparison: “This is basically what the intro of idiocracy was talking about, even though this is a bit worse.”
“His first instinct when he awoke… much we can learn from this,” a third commenter wrote. Several reactions sided firmly with the woman in the clip. “Man Are you serious?? She’s trying to save him, meanwhile the guy being so rude,” one wrote.
Others offered a more sympathetic read of the man’s state of mind: “The dude probably had no idea what was going on when he woke up.”
This is the nature of the viral sensation – the stark contrast between an act of selfless assistance to someone clearly suffering and then the subsequent act of unsolicited physicality.
There has been discussion about whether his behavior indicates that he is confused and recovering from an incident, or whether the focus should be on how the woman reacts and the optics of the situation, no matter the cause. This footage leaves things open-ended.
