A transgender girl from Georgia spoke out online after claiming that her school prevented her from running for homecoming queen because of her gender identity.
The girl shared a TikTok video in which she identified herself as Riley Williams. She said she is a transgender girl who attends Clayton County Public Schools. Riley explained that about three weeks earlier, she applied to run for homecoming queen because she wanted to “uplift” her community. “Especially in a time where all I hear is painful news,” she added.
After applying, Riley said she paid the required fee, had a headshot taken, and began preparing her campaign. However, she was later called to the principal’s office to discuss her application for homecoming queen. According to Riley, the principal told her that she would not be allowed to run because of the district’s regulations concerning biological sex and traditional gender roles.
Riley believed she was being prevented from running because the district still considered her male. “To me, this is discrimination,” she said, describing the situation as a “big problem.” Riley then spoke about her gender identity, saying, “I was born with the brain of a woman. I didn’t choose to be trans, nor did anything happen to cause me to be trans. This is just how I was born, scientifically and biologically.”
Riley continued by saying that “a piece of paper from 17 years ago with the letter M” does not define who she is. She added that the policy denies her “human dignity” and “tortures” her. Riley then spoke about gender dysphoria and her experience living with it.
Riley said that her life only “blossomed” after she began transitioning. She added that the policy would require her to run as “Mr.,” wear a suit, and be called a “king.” She said this “erases” her identity, everything she had worked for, and herself. Riley also said that no other girl was going through the same situation and concluded that she would not run.
Riley now wants to push for change so that no other students have to go through the same situation. She started a petition on Change.org titled “Repeal discriminatory gender role policy in georgia schools.” As of now, the petition has received 733 signatures. In the petition, she wrote, “Let’s stand together to create a fair environment for all students and dismantle institutionalized discrimination. By signing this petition, you are supporting a future where every student, regardless of gender identity, can participate in school activities equally.” It remains unclear whether the school plans to address the situation.
Viewers Support Transgender Georgia Girl Over Homecoming Controversy
Many viewers supported Riley and criticized the policy in Georgia that prevented her from running for homecoming queen. They argued that she should have been allowed to participate. “Why does it matter what gender you ‘biologically’ are for prom? Like what???” one person asked. Another person said, “no person deserves this type of discrimination based on their gender, race, body, or anything.”
More people continued to show support for Riley, with one person writing, “You are way more than a homecoming queen. Thank you for being brave and facing this bigotry. (From a proud dad of a wonderful trans daughter).” Another person encouraged her to seek support from her classmates, saying, “Talk to your fellow students. Tell them to vote for you anyway. Write your name in. You are destined for so much greater, and you are a brave Queen for bringing light to this.”
The video also brought attention to differing views on whether transgender girls should be allowed to run for homecoming queen. Many viewers used the situation to express their opposition to what they described as discrimination against transgender people.
