With Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders set to open on June 25, 2026, the gaming community is hyper-focused on one massive question: What is this massive game going to cost? We’ve all heard the rumors and the scuttlebutt, and well, watch either one of their two trailers or browse their website and stare at what is labeled as in-game console footage. There’s no question why everybody thinks we might be paying a premium for Rockstar Games’ next opus. Here are three reasons GTA 6 could break the bank when it releases on November 19.
Mario did it, Why Not Grand Theft Auto?
Recent leaks from the European retailer FNAC revealed product SKUs indicating an €89.99 price point, which translates to a $79.99 standard edition in the US. While some insiders claim these are just random placeholder codes, an $80 price tag aligns with recent industry shifts. Following the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, games like Mario Kart World successfully established $80 as the premium tier for massive blockbuster releases. However, Nintendo themselves have seemingly slowed down, with $80 being the price point of their physical games, while Digital releases are at the more standard but still pricey $70.
It Likely Cost a Billion Dollars To Make
GTA 6 is widely reported to be the most expensive entertainment product ever created, with development and marketing budgets estimated between $1 billion and $1.5 billion. To hit a healthy break-even point and satisfy shareholders at Take-Two Interactive, a premium price bump over the current $70 industry standard gives Rockstar a massive revenue cushion on day-one sales alone. Now, on the flipside, one can argue why make the initial price so expensive, if the next iteration of GTA Online is looking to really take advantage of in-game purchases to extract more revenue from a hungry player base.
Multiple Editions Will Cost Much More
Even if the base game lands at a “reasonable” $70 or $80, players looking for the definitive experience will absolutely pay over $100. The modern gaming scene has changed a lot since GTA 5’s release, and a multi-tiered rollout, including Deluxe, Premium, and Collector’s Editions, is far more common. We can’t imagine Rockstar Games publishers tying five-day early access windows to their precious GTA 6, but exclusive digital goods for higher tiers will absolutely be on the table. The true cost for die-hard fans will effortlessly eclipse the $100 mark if they include currency or online cosmetics once that mode eventually launches.
We will all find out how much Grand Theft Auto 6 will actually cost in a couple of days, as pre-orders launch worldwide on June 25, 2026. For more info on potential sticker shock, check out our video here.
