A South Dakota woman was annoyed when she found out that a tip was added to her salon trip against her will. Now, she says that “tipping culture has completely gotten out of hand.” She shows her response upon finding out, and how she decided to handle it by questioning things.
Emry (@emrykaiser) goes to a salon to get a facial waxing service. When it’s finished, she meets the stylist at the front of the store to pay her bill. Emry said that she was shocked when her bill was higher than it was supposed to be. To her surprise, she said “the lady tried adding a 15% tip without my consent.”
Emry records the interaction, where you can hear the stylist saying, “Your total’s gonna be $25.91.” The stylist then tells her that with the 15% tip added in, her total actually comes out to $29. Before she can tell her the exact amount down to the cents, Emry cuts her off. She asks the stylist, “Uh… Can I just give you cash?” The stylist apologizes and tells her she can’t. Emry questions in her an incredibly straightforward way, “Why?”
Emry then goes on, asking the stylist why she doesn’t give the customer a choice to leave a tip or not. The stylist replies with, “Well, that’s just the most popular option.” At this point, Emry looks dumbfounded and entirely annoyed by the conversation.
South Dakota Nail Salon Slammed for Demanding Tips
Emry’s video immediately started sparking reactions online. Many viewers questioned why a tip is assumed in the price without the customer getting the choice, just as Emry questioned herself. They believe that the stylist did not handle the situation appropriately and should have allowed Emry to leave a tip if she wanted to.
One commenter stated from a legal standpoint, “It’s actually illegal for a nail tech to charge a tip on top of the fee of the nails. It’s against every single nail salon policy.” Another commenter pointed out, “’The most popular option’ but yet it wasn’t an option.”
One commenter even shared her personal story: “A friend at the time did facials. I went to her consistently. Until I noticed that she wanted a 35% tip and would watch you as you got to the tip page. 20% is generous and what I budgeted for. 35% is greedy. Never went back.”
