Steve Hilton posted a video to the social media platform X recently that sparked curiosity across the platform and has since gone viral. It features the British-born political commentator shopping in a Texas grocery store and commenting on the fact that prices are cheaper than in California.
While this sparked comments from those who agree that California grocery stores should have cheaper produce and products, there are others who see the flaws in this thinking. Beyond that are those who simply wish that he would leave California altogether.
Steve Hilton is currently the Republican candidate in the California Governor race. He’s previously spoken on other issues meant to get the attention of those living in California, such as bringing attention to the Tijuana River and the raw sewage found within.
In this video, Hilton can be seen walking through a grocery store and commenting on the fact that oranges don’t grow in Texas, and are shipped from California, but are much cheaper in the former. He can be heard saying, “it says Texas grown produce. I don’t think they grow oranges in Texas. We grow them in California, but they are a lot cheaper here.”
He explains the reasoning behind the price differences as being because, “you don’t have these insane energy costs and the regulations and the environmental costs, and so the cost of living is lower.“
It is unclear as to what specific Texas energy costs and regulations he is referring to. The state has enforced various federal laws on the subject, such as the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
At the end of the video, he suggests that grocery prices will change if he is voted as Governor during the November election. He does not elaborate on exactly how he plans to achieve that.
Reactions to Steve Hilton’s Reaction to Grocery Costs in Texas
Some commenters agreed with Steve Hilton’s thoughts, with one of the top comments reading, “Born in CA and watched democrats destroy our golden state. Gas shouldn’t be so high, taxes either. CA is sick… look at the Salton Sea’s toxic wasteland and toxic dust. Proof, Democrats don’t care what Californians breathe.“
In fact, Hilton responded to this comment himself, writing, “EXACTLY! Time for Change!” A different commenter challenged his ideas, writing, “Cutting taxes means cutting budgets. What will you cut from the California budget?“
Similarly, Hilton also responds to this comment, writing, “the wasteful spending. They have doubled the budget in the last ten years, yet all the results are worse. We need to spend less and focus on getting better value for all the money taxpayers put in.“
One comment that Steve didn’t respond to read, “Texas also has higher property taxes so…Feel free to move to Texas, Steve.” Currently, the video is still going around X, inviting more viewers to leave their thoughts and opinions behind.
