For the longest time, the movie and television industry have been doing their damndest to bridge the gap between their respective mediums and video games, attempting to create the perfect video game movie or tv adaptation. And for the longest time, almost ever attempt has failed. Despite this, many are still trying. But why?

On the second episode of Colin Moriarty’s newest PlayStation centric podcast, Sacred Symbols, co-host Chris Ray Gun shed light on why he thinks these are appealing, despite how unnecessary they tend to be.

“My assumption is that people have a lot of people in their lives that don’t play video games or aren’t into it,” Gun said. “And they want to have some way to share this world or franchise that they are really faithful to with the people that aren’t necessarily that into it.”

He went on to say that the ones that end up getting made always tend to be necessary though, as the majority of the enjoyment for them comes from the interactions. Moriarty agreed, adding that they tend to be a lucrative distraction more than anything else.

At the moment, there are around 40 video game movies and television shows currently in development, with rumors circulating of more with each passing day.
