A woman in New Mexico went for her daily morning run when, suddenly, a male driver started to follow her around. Not only that, but he also asked her many inappropriate questions, prompting her to ask him to leave her alone and, eventually, call the police.
The disturbing encounter was shared online by Cassie B Fitness. She is a popular fitness content creator who has previously documented her weight-loss journey. With many viral clips under her belt, the one above became one of her biggest, garnering 618,100 views, 57,500 likes, and nearly 2,500 comments.
The clip started with the New Mexico woman during her morning run. The man was already following her. While recording herself, she detailed that the man drove by her, rolled down his window, and asked how her jog was going. On top of that, she said that the car didn’t have a license plate and that she had been following her around for a while.
“I need to call the police. I’m freaking out. I’m freaking out. What do I do? Okay, I have a stun gun, I have a taser,” Cassie said.
Moments later, the driver reached her and once again rolled down his window. Then, he asked her, “Are you straight or a lesbian?” She told him she was straight, but was not interested. Then, very firmly, told the man, mulitple times, to leave her alone.
The woman ended up calling the police, who responded to her location and drove her home.
Safe At Home
Hours later, the woman sat down and provided more context to the incident. She said that she went out at around 6 a.m. for her routine morning run around the rural area where she lives. Once she was near a main road, the man approached her in his car. Immediately, she found him creepy.
Cassie described how terrified she was, how she contemplated calling her husband, who most likely was asleep, and how she was ready to call the police on the man stalking her. When the man asked her whether she was straight or a lesbian, that’s when she had had enough. As the man stayed in the road, and after she screamed at him, she finally called the police.
“Unfortunately, where I was running is in a different county than where I live,” the New Mexico woman said. “Like, I live right on the county border, and in the county that I was now in, there wasn’t a sheriff anywhere close. So they had to get a cop from the county that I live in, and they were, like, 10 minutes away.”
Reactions
The video sparked multiple responses, mostly from concerned viewers shocked by what she shared in her clip. One said, “Career prosecutor here. You did not overreact. At all.” Another one commented, “We can’t run in the dark, or the light, morning or night, or in rural areas or cities. It’s not fair. I’m so glad you’re okay.”
Others gave her some advice, again, fearing for her safety. One wrote, “I’m so sorry. Please change your route.” Another one added, “Set your phone up so that if you ever call 911, your emergency contacts are sent a text of the transcript of the call and tracking your live location.”
Cassie expressed her frustration that such an incident had practically ruined running for her. She now has to worry about the unnamed man every time she goes out for her morning jog, and she will definitely have to change her route every day to be safe.
