Fourth of July is drawing ever closer, and for many Americans, it’s a commemoration of their freedom, but in Buffalo, New York, certain residents are outraged after City Hall canceled the upcoming Fourth of July fireworks. Furthermore, Buffalo City Hall came under fire from critics after holding a Somali flag-raising event just a day after announcing the 4th of July Fireworks cancellation.

The incident occurred on July 1 at Buffalo City Hall, New York. The controversy erupted after Buffalo officials raised the Somali flag outside City Hall to commemorate Somalia’s 66th Independence Day, joining similar celebrations held by Somali communities around the world. The ceremony came just days after the city announced that its Fourth of July fireworks show would not take place this year, fueling claims on social media that the two decisions reflected misplaced priorities.

Posts criticizing the event quickly spread across X, with some users characterizing the ceremony as “replacing” Independence Day celebrations. Others argued that honoring another nation’s independence at a government building was inappropriate so close to America’s own national holiday.

Even South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace amplified the criticism by posting, “Call in the National Guard,” in response to videos of the flag-raising ceremony. Her comment was widely shared by conservative accounts as the debate intensified.

Some commenters took an even stronger stance. One commenter asked, “How is that not considered treason?” while another wrote, “When is enough going to be enough?” Others lamented Buffalo’s decision to cancel its fireworks display, arguing that city leaders should have focused on celebrating America’s Independence Day instead.

Happening all over the US

For the record, Buffalo officials have not indicated that the Somali flag ceremony was intended to replace Fourth of July celebrations. The city’s decision to cancel its annual fireworks display was announced separately, though the timing of both events has become a flashpoint in an increasingly heated online debate over patriotism, immigration and the role of cultural celebrations in American public life.

Regardless, certain critics still consider what Buffalo officials did as inappropriate given the current festivities in America at the moment. “Many are questioning why a U.S. city would fly another nation’s flag while sidelining its own Independence Day events,” questions an Instagram user.

It’s worth noting that the incident isn’t limited to Buffalo, New York. City officials in Columbus, Ohio, are also facing backlash for a now-deleted post on social media celebrating the Somalian Independence Day with a similar flag-raising ceremony. However, Buffalo City’s outrage seems more intense due to the recent cancellation of the 4th of July Fireworks.

Some posts also criticized local policies unrelated to the ceremony, pointing to school holiday schedules and immigration issues as evidence of broader political concerns. Several comments called for investigations into city officials, while others claimed Buffalo was becoming unrecognizable.
