California Man Appears to Fake Police Call During Hotel Dispute: ‘And Then the Phone Rings’

Someone got a call. It just wasn’t him.

A California hotel worker is drawing attention online after sharing video of a guest he claims pretended to call police during a dispute over an additional deposit. The comment section, however, was far more entertained by the man’s apparent attempt at staging a police call than concerned about the hotel policy itself.

Hostile man at work today, he got angry when he made a new reservation to extend another night and we asked for another deposit. He also had a cat in the room, we don’t take cats and a stolen printer. We will make sure you don’t ever stay at this hotel again SIR. And also make sure you have funds when you stay at a hotel!! #karen #frontdesk #fyp #funny #foryoupage

Posted to TikTok by @kiingjeremy, the clip shows a man speaking on the phone while appearing to narrate a dispute taking place inside a hotel lobby.”They’re trying to throw me out of the hotel,” he says. “So I believe we’re going to small claims court.”

Things only get more dramatic from there as the man seemingly launches into an impromptu performance involving the sheriff’s department, a “civil standby,” and the hotel’s manager. At one point, the hotel’s phone can even be heard ringing in the background, a detail commenters later pointed to as unintentionally comedic given the man’s apparent attempt at escalating the disagreement.

According to the video’s caption, the California creator says the guest became upset after making a new reservation to extend his stay and being asked to provide another deposit. The hotel worker also alleges the man had a cat in his room despite hotel policy prohibiting them and claims staff discovered a stolen printer.

In a follow-up comment, the creator added, “And btw he was recording us first! I didn’t start recording until he pretended to call the police but we actually did.”

TikTok Has Thoughts

Many commenters couldn’t get over the man’s apparent attempt at involving law enforcement in what they viewed as a straightforward hotel dispute.”I love when they think the cops care about business policy matters,” one person wrote.

Others found humor in the situation. “When he said ‘civil standby’ I started laughing cause wtf lol,” one commenter wrote. Another laughed at the timing of the hotel’s phone going off in the middle of the man’s apparent call to authorities, writing, “And then the phone rings.”

Some viewers pointed out that deposits are generally refundable, questioning why the disagreement had escalated to the point of an alleged police call. “But the point of a deposit is that you get it back, as long as you don’t destroy the room,” one person said.

One commenter perhaps summarized the mood best, writing, “The male equivalent of a Karen is a Ken.” However, not everyone was convinced the video captured the entire story. “Much more to story sir,” one commenter suggested.

Overall, viewers were more amused by the alleged fake police call than anything else, with many seeing it as an over-the-top attempt to avoid paying an additional deposit.
