In a highly contentious interaction, an Illinois woman has refused to pay a contractor for his work, leading him to tear it all down. While the contractor maintains that he should be paid for his labor, the woman insists that his services weren’t professional enough to warrant payment.
According to the woman, the contractor was unlicensed, and his work wasn’t up to par. On the other hand, the contractor stated that the woman cost him $2,000, and if she wanted licensed work, she should have asked him if he was licensed or not before hiring him.
Given that the interaction has been filmed and uploaded to the internet, the entire world is weighing in. Pretty much everyone seems to agree that the woman should have paid the contractor, given that he already completed a lot of the work. People also believe that the contractor was right to tear it all down once the woman confirmed she would not be paying him.
As one person wrote, “Good for him.” Another shared, “They wait till the job is done and then complain to try and get it for free.” Similarly, many asserted that the woman was likely a scammer who knew the contractor wasn’t licensed, and purposely didn’t ask, so she could use that as an excuse not to pay him. To be clear, that is all speculation on the internet’s part, and not evidenced in the clip.
Other people noted that, while they disagreed with the woman’s refusal to pay for the contractor’s services, his work did seem to leave a lot to be desired. People pointed out that, if his work were up to par, he wouldn’t have been able to tear it all down as easily as he did.
One Redditor observed, “I don’t know, by how easily that railing moved when pushed, I’m not sure how well built it is.” Someone else echoed, “The stairs appear to have been built with untreated lumber, which will decay quickly. … You never, ever want to have work done on your home by an unlicensed contractor. If you are going to do construction, get your contractor’s license.“
Some people wondered if the woman had asked the contractor if he was licensed, and he lied in order to get the job. Like the other speculations about the clip, there is no proof that he was dishonest. Both people in the clip had very different viewpoints and versions of what happened, so it’s impossible to know the truth.
One internet user seemed to sum up the public’s thoughts on this dispute perfectly. They wrote, “He should be licensed and insured, but waiting until the job is done and then pulling this [expletive] is awful.“
