It has been confirmed by Lucasfilm that Star Wars: Episode IX will be the final chapter in the Skywalker saga.
We know that the creator of the franchise, George Lucas, had originally planned for nine Skywalker films anyway so this news doesn’t come as a complete shock to some Star Wars fanatics out there.
In an interview with IGN back in March, Mark Hamill revealed some information on how Lucas would have ended his Skywalker films if given the chance:
“I happen to know that George didn’t kill Luke until the end of [Episode] 9, after he trained Leia. Which is another thread that was never played upon [in The Last Jedi].”
Hamill then told IGN that Lucas never got the opportunity to write out scripts before Disney acquired the rights to the franchise:
“George had an overall arc – if he didn’t have all the details, he had sort of an overall feel for where the [sequel trilogy was] going – but this one’s more like a relay race. You run and hand the torch off to the next guy, he picks it up and goes.
“Ryan didn’t write what happens in 9 – he was going to hand it off to, originally, Colin Trevorrow and now J.J. […] It’s an ever-evolving, living, breathing thing. Whoever’s onboard gets to play with the life-size action figures that we all are.”
Mark Hamill will be returning to play Luke Skywalker at the end of this sequel trilogy along with the late Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa. Disney will use unseen footage from The Force Awakens to capture Fisher’s last appearance as the iconic character.
Star Wars: Episode IX is set to release in December 2019.
