Turns out he was barking up the wrong tree.

A Washington creator is facing backlash after sharing a video of a woman confronting him while he climbed a protected tree during a photoshoot in Olympic National Park. He labeled the woman a “Karen” in his caption, but many commenters argued she was simply trying to protect the park. Others questioned whether the tree was even still alive, turning the discussion into a larger debate over conservation and where people should draw the line in nature.

TikTok creator @evngeo_ shared the clip, writing, “i just wanted to get a nice photo of my girlfriend.” The video opens with the creator climbing Washington’s Tree of Life while a woman, who remains off camera, tells him, “The thing is dying and you’re climbing on it.” He pushes back, insisting the tree isn’t dying but simply leaning over.

The woman continues urging him to get down, calling his behavior disrespectful before eventually labeling him “selfish.” As the confrontation escalates, she mistakenly assumes the woman with him is his mother, prompting both sides to trade one final insult before the clip cuts off.

TikTok Picks Sides

Calling the woman a “Karen” turned out to be a tough sell. Commenters wasted little time defending her, arguing the Washington creator shouldn’t have been climbing the tree in the first place. “This is not a Karen moment, this is disrespectful. How embarrassing that grown adults have zero common sense,” one commenter wrote.

Others pointed out that climbing the Tree of Life is prohibited, noting the creator was violating posted park rules.”BTW the tree is completely illegal to climb on. It’s protected by Olympic National Park,” another viewer wrote.

Some also argued that speaking up when they see visitors damaging protected areas shouldn’t be controversial.”I’m glad she said something. Tired of cowards just standing around not calling out bad behavior,” one commenter wrote.

Not everyone felt the confrontation was justified, however. Some questioned why climbing a tree had become such a big issue in the first place.”Can somebody please explain why we’re upset about climbing on trees? Playing in nature?? I don’t understand,” one person wrote.

Others believed the tree didn’t need protecting at all.”The tree is dead. It doesn’t need protection. No need for any of this,” another commenter argued.

Ultimately, the creator’s decision to label the woman a “Karen” became one of the biggest points of contention. It seems many viewers felt she wasn’t policing someone without cause but enforcing rules designed to protect one of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks.
