Florida’s emergency fund was created to help the state respond quickly when disaster strikes. Now, newly reported state spending records are fueling outrage after showing hundreds of millions of dollars from that fund were instead directed toward Gov. Ron DeSantis’ immigration initiatives, including the controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” and “Deportation Depot” detention facilities.
According to reporting by the Florida Phoenix, the Florida Division of Emergency Management spent roughly $890 million between July 2025 and June 2026. Of that total, $564 million, about 63 percent, was spent on immigration enforcement, exceeding the combined spending on severe weather, emergency rescues, aid to counties, and other disaster-related missions.
The emergency trust was originally established in 2022 to give the governor rapid access to funding during hurricanes, floods, and other crises without waiting for legislative approval. However, after DeSantis declared a state of emergency over immigration in 2023, the fund also became a source of financing for border enforcement efforts.
The report says Florida has now committed more than $1 billion in immigration related contracts, with the emergency fund left holding less than $7 million before lawmakers approved an additional $250 million allocation.
The revelations sparked an immediate firestorm in Florida’s online community, where thousands of users piled into a subreddit thread, delivering strong criticism aimed squarely at DeSantis and the Republican administration.

Several users questioned the timing, noting that Florida is once again facing hurricane season with emergency reserves dramatically reduced. “Just in time for cane season,” one person wrote, while another warned, “Better pray really hard that this and the next several hurricane seasons are beyond mild.”
Some commenters also criticized what they saw as hypocrisy from Republicans who frequently campaign on fiscal responsibility.
“The party of ‘fiscal responsibility,’ the party that talks about transparency and small government,” one Redditor wrote before arguing the latest figures tell a very different story.
Others focused on the cost of the detention facilities themselves, with one user citing publicly reported estimates that Alligator Alcatraz ultimately carried a price tag exceeding $1 billion.
The Florida Phoenix also reported that emergency management officials still owe contractors hundreds of millions of dollars tied to those immigration projects, while lawmakers are reportedly still waiting for a required financial report detailing the fund’s health after the agency missed its reporting deadline.
With Florida entering another storm season, the spending figures have become more than just another political flashpoint. For critics, the question is no longer whether the money was spent, but whether redirecting disaster funds toward immigration enforcement will leave the Sunshine State exposed when the next major emergency arrives.
