Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw Faces Backlash Over Second Reported STOCK Act Disclosure Violation: ‘Zero Consequences Will Arise’

Texas U.S. Representative Dan Crenshaw is facing criticism after new congressional financial filings reportedly showed he failed to disclose stock-option trades within the timeframe required by the federal STOCK Act.

According to NOTUS, newly filed congressional financial disclosures indicate Crenshaw failed to report approximately $15,000 in Meta stock-option trades within the STOCK Act’s required disclosure window. The filings show he purchased the options on April 28 before selling them on May 5.

Since 2012, the STOCK Act has required lawmakers to disclose certain financial transactions within 45 days. The penalties for failing to comply are relatively minor, however, as the standard fine is only $200, which the House and Senate ethics committees can waive. The filings concern the timing of the required disclosure, not an allegation that the trades themselves were illegal.

Dan Crenshaw Criticized by Texas Residents

The report quickly spread to Reddit’s r/Texas community, where many users criticized Crenshaw while questioning whether the STOCK Act’s disclosure rules carry meaningful consequences. One user condemned his behavior, saying, “In my last job, I had to report all investments and could only invest in certain stocks greenlit by my company due to my conflict of interest. Congress has no limitations and can just invest in everything before giving deals to private companies.”

Others argued that “Any elected official who benefits from trading stock or options based on insider knowledge should be forced to repay gains into the employees’ retirement fund. The employees of a publicly traded company were the victims.”

Many commenters expressed frustration over what they believed would be the lack of meaningful consequences. As one user put it, “Zero consequences will arise.”

Someone else claimed, “This is why Republicans have made such a big stink about fraud and insider trading the last 20 years. So they, the worst offenders, can continue to do it without consequences and downplay it to their base.”

Whether Crenshaw ultimately faces any penalty remains to be seen, but the reported disclosure violation has renewed debate over whether the STOCK Act’s relatively small penalties are enough to encourage timely financial disclosures from members of Congress.
