New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez challenged Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell’s five-week absence during a CBS interview. She questioned whether his silence showed an inability to fulfill his duties. She also said public officials cannot disappear from work without explaining themselves.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said Thursday that Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) five-week absence from Congress and lack of response to Gov. Andy Beshear's (D-KY) request for an update on his health "conveys a very disturbing inability to fulfill his duties."

CBS asked whether McConnell should resign after remaining unseen for more than five weeks.

Ocasio-Cortez said Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear had requested a health update weeks earlier. She said neither McConnell nor his staff answered the governor’s letter.

She called that silence “a very disturbing inability to fulfill his duties.” Ocasio-Cortez said the public should begin asking where McConnell is. She acknowledged his medical privacy but stressed his accountability to the American people.

Ocasio-Cortez said Americans cannot leave work for over a month without explaining their absence. She added that elected officials accept reduced privacy because they remain accountable to the public. She called the lack of transparency disturbing “regardless of your party or background.”

AOC Faces Dianne Feinstein Comparisons Over Mitch McConnell Remarks

The exchange shifted into a dispute over whether Ocasio-Cortez had applied the same standard to Democrats.

One response questioned, “Did you say that about Diane Feinstein? Just checking. You’re not wrong, just making sure you’re consistent.” Another user wrote, “Fun fact, [AOC] didnt say anything when she watched Lloyd austin do the same thing.”

A separate response stated, “Now do [Rep Maxine Waters]. She been missing g for 8 months.”

Another wrote, “For once I agree with her, although she is being a hypocrite. There have been two house Dems that were worse and she said nothing. She covered for Biden for 4 years.”

Other users backed Ocasio-Cortez’s call for answers despite the criticism. One wrote, “I don’t care about the double standard here. She’s right. Also, we need term limits. Congress is not a nursing home.”

Another stated, “I’m a life-long Republican and I want answers as well. He needs to resign and be replaced immediately.”

McConnell’s return remains uncertain. The dispute over consistent accountability across party lines also remains unresolved.
