New York City landlords filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn a two-year freeze on about one million rent-stabilized apartments. They accuse Mayor Zohran Mamdani of improperly influencing the Rent Guidelines Board to fulfill a campaign promise. The coalition says the board approved the freeze without properly considering required evidence.
Fox News aired Randy Mastro’s interview about the case during America Reports. Mastro represents the landlords challenging the rent freeze.
Mastro said the independent board must weigh evidence and fairly consider available data. He alleged it instead “perverted a process at the mayor’s behest” to deliver Mamdani’s campaign promise.
He called the proceedings “a sham process to deliver a predetermined outcome” directed by mayoral fiat. Mastro added, “That is blatantly illegal.”
He said landlords face rising taxes, utility bills, insurance expenses and other costs. Mastro argued the available data did not support a 0% rent increase.
He also accused the board of failing to consider the required statutory criteria. Mastro said a longtime board member quit on the morning of the vote.
New York City Rent Freeze Lawsuit Draws Divided Reactions
The legal challenge prompted divided responses on X over rent controls, landlord costs and government authority.
One user welcomed the lawsuit, writing, “Good! I hope he gets sued by a lot of people so that he doesn’t have time to spread socialism.”
Another response stated, “Finally we’re stopping socialist rent freezes, good riddance, Based.”
A separate user argued, “If you freeze rent costs, then you have to freeze every other cost there is. It can’t be done. It won’t work.” Another wrote, “You can’t freeze rates in a free country.”
Opposing responses questioned the lawsuit and the landlords’ position. One user wrote, “There is a massive difference between a legal challenge being filed and a court actually declaring something illegal.” The user added, “A lawsuit is just one side’s argument.”
Another user criticized the landlords’ lawsuit, writing, “Imagine fighting for the right to fleece the people.”
The rent freeze’s future remains unresolved as the landlords’ legal challenge proceeds. The court will determine whether the board followed the required process.
