No justice, no peace

The Pitt County, North Carolina, Sheriff’s Office is facing mounting questions from local news outlets and citizens after revealing, more than a month after the fact, that bomb-detection K-9 Chili died from being left in a hot patrol car, disclosing the June 11 death only on July 21. The delayed disclosure, a redacted internal investigation, and confirmation that the K-9’s vehicle lacked heat-monitoring technology have fueled calls for more transparency and a full investigation from the department.

Rest in peace, Chilli 💔

In a post shared on X, citizen outrage poured out as answers about the death hit a fever pitch. Chilli, a bomb-detection K-9 donated to the department through a federal program, joined the sheriff’s office in May 2025. The high temperature in Greenville that day reached 99 degrees. The department said the deputy handling Chilli has served the county for years but declined to name him, citing North Carolina’s confidential personnel records statute.

North Carolina Citizens React

According to WCT112, the sheriff’s office said it launched an internal investigation the day after Chilli’s death and concluded it was accidental, but has declined to release the timeline of events, how long Chilli was in the vehicle, or who conducted the investigation. Officials confirmed the deputy’s K-9 vehicle was not equipped with a Hot-N-Pop system, heat-monitoring technology some of the department’s other vehicles already have, citing budget constraints. Here are what some angry citizens had to say about the incident.

“The officer responsible for this should be fired on the spot. Jail time too.”

“Police Department: “K9 officers are just like real human officers! If you injure or kill them, you will be charged and jailed!” Police officer when he kills a fellow K9 officer: “It’s ok, it was just a dog.”

“Knowing NC they’ll probably get promoted with a pay raise smfh”

The department says it is now asking Pitt County commissioners to fund new patrol vehicles equipped with heat-monitoring technology for every K-9 team, not just some. This hasn’t appeased the people of North Carolina, as the demand for justice for Chilli continues.
