A Virginia woman applied for a job, hoping she would be able to help out her entire family. But when it came time to get her birth certificate to present to the job, her mom denied her. Now, she says “people only want to help when something benefits them.” Commenters have other ideas and speculations about what might be going on.

Mya (@theblackwomanuptheway) is trying to get out of a hostile living environment with her own mom. She applied to a job and needed her birth certificate, as is required when applying to many jobs. She confronts her mom, telling her she needs her birth certificate for her “job interview tomorrow.” But Mya is met with insane amounts of resistance just for trying to obtain a document that’s legally her own. Her mom tells her she needs to “go buy” her own copy of her birth certificate!

Mya says, “What do you mean buy me one? I thought you had it. You lost it?” Her mom tells her that she does have Mya’s birth certificate but then she exclaims, “But that’s mine! That’s the one that I got for giving birth!” Mya can’t believe her own ears at this point and looks baffled as she speaks to her mom. She says, “But that’s my legal document. It has my name on it.” Her mom demands, “If it’s your legal document, why was my name on it when they mailed it?” Mya sounds stunned by this. She shouts at her mother, telling her she was a “baby” so of course they mailed it to her.

She tries to tell her mom she has no idea where she even needs to “go to buy a birth certificate.” On top of that, she tells her mom she doesn’t have money for that. Mya demands her birth certificate, saying that her mom has it right there and she should be able to access it. In the end, Mya asks her mom, “You want me to help you, right?” She knows her mom is struggling with money and is trying to get a job so she can help around the household.

Her mom responds with, “That’s what I said.” She then tells Mya she’ll need $25 for her birth certificate, which Mya can’t afford without a job. They run in circles with this, with her mom berating her for trying to ask for the money for her birth certificate. Mya gives up and says, “Whatever” and ends the conversation with her mom, knowing it’s getting her nowhere.

The video immediately sparked reactions, with many people sharing their opinions about Mya’s mom and living situation. Many commenters speculated that her mom might be withholding her birth certificate from her for a reason. As one suggested, “She’s using your info.” Another stated, “CHECK YOUR CREDIT IMMEDIATELY.”

Other commenters tried to show support for Mya in other ways. One commenter shared, “Girl, I’ll send you 20 cause what.” Another urged Mya, “She’s trying to hold you back. Baby, run!! Get you a job, get your own place, and love from a distance!” Commenters continue to share their personal stories about relationships with their parents and what they would do in this situation.
