A New York woman has sparked widespread backlash after sharing security footage that appears to show a delivery driver throwing one of her packages over a gate instead of opening it. The TikTok, which has amassed more than 2.7 million views, prompted hundreds of viewers to criticize the driver’s handling of the parcel after the contents were smashed.
The video comes from katiethejane — aka Katie — on TikTok, whose account mainly features apartment decorating, DIY home improvement projects and interior design inspiration from her New York home. Videos documenting delivery mishaps are unusual for her page, making the damaged package incident a notable departure from the content she typically shares.
In the footage, captured by a nearby home security camera, a delivery driver walks up to the gate and, instead of opening it, hurls the large parcel over it. Accompanying the footage is overlaid text that reads, “The kind of thing that happens when you ship your handmade ceramics.”
Katie says the package contained handmade ceramics and was clearly marked with multiple “Fragile” stickers. Despite that, the security footage appears to show the driver throwing it over the gate rather than carrying it through. The video’s cover image shows several broken handmade ceramic pieces, which the creator says were inside the package.
Viewers Slam Delivery Driver’s Handling of the Fragile Package
The video quickly drew reactions on TikTok, with many viewers criticizing the driver’s decision to throw the package instead of using the gate. “he didnt even TRY the gate,” one person wrote, while another simply added, “That person should be fired.”
Others shared similar experiences with damaged deliveries. “A delivery company threw away a family heirloom being mailed to us after our grandfather died bc it was apparently damaged in the mail…” one viewer recalled. Another wrote, “Fed ex threw my box at the door that said LIVE FISH all over it I never got up so fast before.”
Some commenters also offered their own suggestions for shipping fragile items. “u gotta write ‘THIS IS AN URN,'” one person joked, while another compared the situation to delivery practices overseas, writing, “In Spain they ring your doorbell, if you don’t open the door they call you to verify if you are home or not, if no answer they take the package to the post office for you to go pick it up there.”
One commenter, who said they had experience packing orders, concluded, “Worked at online shops packing orders for years. Whenever I taught new people how to pack fragile stuff I always said ‘always assume the delivery guy will drop it from his van’.“
While the delivery driver may not have realized the package contained fragile handmade ceramics, many viewers felt the damage could have been avoided if they had simply taken a few extra seconds to use the gate.
